ICAR-Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (ICAR-CPCRI)
The ICAR-Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (ICAR-CPCRI), Kasaragod, established in 1916, is one of the premier horticulture research institutes under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi; mandated to work on coconut, arecanut, cocoa and palmyrah. The Institute has two Regional Stations (Kayamkulam in Kerala and Vittal in Karnataka) and three Regional Centres (Kidu in Karnataka, Kahikuchi in Assam and Mohitnagar in West Bengal). The Institute also holds the International Coconut Gene Bank for South Asia & Middle East at Kidu. The All India Coordinated Research Project on Plantation Crops operates in CPCRI with 28 centres in 14 states to validate technologies developed by the Institute. Two Krishi Vigyan Kendras (Kasaragod & Alappuzha) conduct agricultural extension activities.
The research programmes of the institute are organized under five divisions viz. Crop Improvement, Crop Production, Crop Protection, Physiology, Biochemistry and Post Harvest Technology, and Social Sciences.
About Kasaragod
Kasaragod, located in the northern most part of Kerala, is administrative headquarters of Kasaragod District in the state. Kasaragod is also known as Sapta BhashaSangama Bhoomi (The Land of Seven Languages). Situated in the rich biodiversity of Western Ghats, Kasaragod is a hidden gem of the Malabar Coast, located on the estuary where the Chandragiri River empties into the Arabian Sea, and is home world famous Bekal For; the largest fort in Kerala. Other tourist attractions include trekking to natural environment of Ranipuram and Kottancheri Hills, historical and religious sites like the Madhur Temple, Anathapuram Lake Temple, Bela Church and Malik Dinar Mosque. The nearest railway station is Kasaragod Railway Station (KGQ), which is about 5km from the ICAR-CPCRI campus. Kasaragod is on the major railway line connecting cities like Mangalore, Bangalore and Thiruvananthapuram. Alternatively, you can alight at Mangalore central (MAQ) or Mangalore junction (MAJN), which is approximately 50 km away.
The institute is located near National Highway 66 (NH66), which connects major cities along the west coast of India, making it accessible by bus or car. The Kasaragod bus stand is about 4 km from the campus, and taxis or auto rickshaws can be hired to reach the institute. It takes about 1.0 to 1.5 hours to drive from Mangalore to CPCRI via NH66 (National Highway).
